Young girls and boys are the subjects of these dramatic, strongly emotional, and passionate photographs by New York-based photographer Wendy Sacks. Each water-based scene demonstrates moments of loneliness, the bonds of family, unrequited love, or untimely death. This series, Immersed in Living Water, reveals all kinds of emotions and, according to the artist, combines “an understanding of children with the knowledge of developmental stages and the struggle of the human spirit.”
In much of her work, photographer Wendy Sacks draws on her experiences during her previous work in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. As she faced daily sadness and suffering in her medical work, Sacks found that photographing her patients helped her to separate from the distress and to maintain a professionalism with her patients.
Early in her career, Sacks had to leave the medical field due to personal illness, and some physical limitations led her to pursue photography also as a diversion for her own struggles. In this process of personal suffering and torment, the artist says, “Water has become my medium of choice by chance. It has become a medium for physical and emotional healing.”
