There are many ways to be a family, and the heartwarming adoption of Michael Clark Jr. is a reminder of that. On December 5, 2019, the little boy was formally adopted by Andrea Melvin and Dave Eaton after being in their foster care for about a year. This alone is reason enough to celebrate, but Michael made the occasion even more special by inviting his entire kindergarten class to attend the adoption hearing.
Behind Michael and his parents sat dozens of his classmates from Wealthy Elementary in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. And his peers brought more than their well-wishes with them to the hearing. During the proceedings, they waved paper hearts mounted to sticks in support of their friend.
Michael had requested that his kindergarten class be at his adoption hearing. “We asked him and he said ‘You know, the class is kind of my family,' ” recalled his mom. “And he wanted them to be there.” Michael’s teacher, Kerry McKee, also remarked that the event was a learning experience for her group of kids. “The lesson is put a little love in your heart,” she said. “We rise when we support others.”
