Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ Sets Record for Biggest Opening Weekend Ever for a Female Director

On top of being the must-see blockbuster of the summer, Barbie has also made box office history. After scoring $155 million on its opening weekend, Barbie now holds the title for the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman. That woman is Greta Gerwig. The title was previously held by Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, which earned $153 million upon its debut in 2019.

Overdue Library Book Is Finally Returned 119 Years Late

Have you ever returned a library book late? Perhaps by a day or two or maybe even a week? How about 119 years? …No? Well, a particular volume from the New Bedford Free Public Library in Massachusetts actually took that long to make its way back to the library’s shelves. A copy of An Elementary Treatise on Electricity by British scientist James Clerk Maxwell that was checked out in 1904 was finally returned in 2023.

James Webb Space Telescope Celebrates Its First Year With 153-Megapixel Photo of the Birth of Sun-Like Stars

The first deep field image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was shared in July 2022. Since then, the astronomy community has been in awe by glimpses of distant galaxies and formations it has been able to capture. In celebration of its first year, a 153-megapixel image of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, the closest star-forming region to our solar system, has been released.
