Over 1 Million LEGO Bricks Used to Build Life-Sized Sports Car That Really Drives

Many of us dream of owning a sports car, but buying one as flashy as the Bugatti Chiron means a hefty price tag—$3 million dollars, to be exact. If that model is beyond your budget, LEGO has come up with the next best thing: a life-sized LEGO version of a Bugatti Chiron. While it still boasts more than a million, that number comes from the amount of LEGO pieces needed to assemble the fully functional vehicle.

As you could imagine, this car is no ordinary LEGO set. Weighing in at 3,300 pounds, it uses over a million LEGO Technic parts, more than 2,300 LEGO motors, and 4,000 gear wheels in its engine. And for anyone wondering whether this car actually works, a former race driver recently took the car for a spin. It can’t match the speed of the real Chiron (which can reach 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds), but the driver was able to get the car to go 12.4 mph (about the speed of a bike ride). Not bad for LEGOs.

Getting the LEGO Bugatti road ready was itself an achievement. This feat of LEGO engineering took more than 13,000 work hours to develop and build, but the results were well worth the effort. The LEGO car accommodates two people and is complete with a speedometer and brake pedal. Powered by two batteries, there’s no need for knowledge of a manual transmission—it can only go one speed. But, you can control the lights!

If you’d like a LEGO race car of your own, the company sells a 1:8 scale version of the Bugatti Chiron (containing 3,599 pieces) in their online shop.

LEGO created a fully functional, life-sized version of the Bugatti Chiron sports car.
