With Labor Day now past, another Burning Man has concluded. Black Rock City, the temporary site of the annual event in the northwest Nevada desert, was host to 70,000 participants from August 25 to September 2. Burning Man has a new theme every year, and for 2019 it was Metamorphoses—an idea intended as a “celebration of change and an exploration of uncertainty” and an “embrace of the elusive now.” To express the concept, there was an amazing collection of sculptures and, of course, festival fashion.
The help of many volunteers made the playa possible. Thanks to their dedication, attendees enjoyed the monumental beauty of art from creatives around the world. Burners explored the popular Head Maze, a giant human head that towered four stories and invited entrants to traverse an 18-room labyrinth. Aside from internal exploration, they climbed atop and posed with dazzling sculptures such as Niloticus, a 40-foot-long mosaic crocodile that was illuminated at night. As they lived in the moment, the festival came to an end with The Man (the larger-than-life wooden effigy) going up in flames. This year, the sculptural duo HYBYCOZO had the honor of helping to design the piece, and their laser-cut geometric design made the base of the monument.
Cellphone reception is limited during Burning Man, and Burners are encouraged to curb their social media usage. Because of this, the best scenes from the festival arrive after everyone has packed to go home. Scroll down to see some of our favorites from the 2019 event.
