Emperor Penguin Is Spotted in Australia, 2,000 Miles Away From Its Antarctic Home

Australia is home to a myriad of animals that can only be found there. Yet, despite this treasure trove of biodiversity, the island country had one of the most peculiar animal sightings in recent memory. A video captured an emperor penguin, a species known for being endemic to Antarctica, wandering around Ocean Beach in the town of Denmark, in Western Australia.

2025 Audubon Photography Awards Expands Its Reach Into South America

For its 16th year, the Audubon Photography Awards has expanded into new territory with special categories dedicated to photographers in Chile and Colombia. These nine categories add to the eight prizes awarded to residents of the United States and Canada in this annual celebration of bird photography. Felipe Esteban Toledo Alarcón was the inaugural grand prize winner for Chile and Colombia with his dynamic photo of a kingfisher emerging from the water.

Scientists Stunned by Bright Orange Shark Discovered off the Coast of Costa Rica

Genetics are incredible. They can turn a manta ray pink and peacock white. And apparently, they can transform a shark into an oversized goldfish. In summer 2024, a unique nurse shark was discovered during a sport fishing trip in Costa Rica. Its orange-golden hue surprised participants and scientists alike. Now, a new study published in Marine Biodiversity is shedding light on what exactly is happening genetically to this unique shark.
