The Sakura Casa is both practical and beautiful, but the craft behind it is what’s most impressive. It’s produced by Gifu’s Handcraft Artisan House Casa—a company that promotes centuries-old traditions by working with local artisans and traditional craftspeople. The art of making Japanese-style parasols is truly special and each one takes months to complete. Each parasol is made by hand from three types of traditional Japanese paper (called Mino washi) that is carefully stretched around a bamboo frame. The maker has to make constant adjustments to the tension as they gently pull so that he parasol opens and closes smoothly.
It’s no surprise that The Sakura Casa doesn’t come cheap. Prices range from 19,440-34,560 ¥ ($174.18-$309.73) and those interested are asked to phone or contact the artisans in person to place an order.
