Film noir might translate from French as “black film,” but there’s a lot more to this vintage movie genre than just black-and-white visuals. These moody Hollywood classics from the 1940s and ’50s are known for their dramatic lighting, obscure camera angles, and gripping stories filled with crime, mystery, and betrayal. If you’re in the mood to escape into shadowy worlds filled with femme fatales and fedora-wearing baddies, you can stream 60 film noir classics for free on YouTube.

American film critic Roger Ebert once described film noir as “a movie which at no time misleads you into thinking there is going to be a happy ending.” The list of 60 free films curated by Open Culture really brings his comically pessimistic point to life. One of the highlights is The Big Bluff (1955), where a con man thinks he’s hit the jackpot marrying a wealthy woman on her deathbed. However, once she starts recovering, he and his new lover hatch a dark plan to get their hands on her fortune. Another classic is The Green Glove (1952), which tells the story of a World War II veteran in France, played by Glen Ford, who gets mixed up in murder while investigating a stolen treasure.

Many film noir narratives are steeped in doom and despair, but that’s exactly what makes the genre so compelling. The twists, tension, and the slow unraveling of the characters just pull you in, making this dark film genre totally timeless.
