On July 20, 1969 our world was forever changed when Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on the moon. It took four days for the rocket to arrive after taking off from the Kennedy Space Center, placing the three-man crew on the lunar surface. And, of course, this historic moment allowed Neil Armstrong to utter the famous words, “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” as he stepped outside six hours after touchdown.
To celebrate this incredible breakthrough, July 20 is deemed National Moon Day. President Richard Nixon declared the commemorative holiday in 1971, and people have diligently campaigned to make it a national holiday. Luckily, even if you can't make it to the moon yourself, there's plenty of ways to celebrate this incredible celestial body.
Millions continue to be fascinated by the moon even today, with 2020 giving us an incredible supermoon known as the Flower Moon. It's no wonder that the moon has inspired designers for years, spurring fashion, jewelry, and art themed around its phases and unique geography. In celebration of National Moon Day, we've gathered together some of our favorite finds to help you keep a piece of the moon close by.
