Striking Portraits of 2020 Golden Globe Winners Right After They Received Their Award

The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards kicked off the awards season on Sunday, January 5, 2020. Held at the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized achievements in both television and film over the past year. The televised presentation shared the nominees and ultimately the winners who then gave their acceptance speeches. But once they were whisked off stage, they participated in a tradition that's not part of the main ceremony. Each winner went in front of a photographer and had their portrait snapped with their golden statuette in hand. This year, Alexi Lubomirski had the honor of photographing the newly minted winners.

The subdued bronze-colored backdrop, complete with two large props, allowed for each actor to shine. It also afforded us a peek into their personalities. Awkwafina, who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for The Farewell, sat down and held the statuette in one hand. The other hand pointed to the award, and her facial expression conveyed a mixture of pure delight as well as surprise—genuine shock exuding from the beaming actress. Perhaps it was the significance of her win in this category; Awkwafina is the first performer of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe in a lead actress category.

Scroll down to see more winners from the 77th Annual Golden Globes. While there are many you’re sure to recognize, you’re also sure to be introduced to actors whom you’ve never seen before.

Once an actor wins a Golden Globe award, they get the portrait taken by a photographer. Alexi Lubomirski had the honor of snapping pictures this year.
