At first glance, these artworks appear to be intricate white line illustrations set against solid black backgrounds. However, in reality, each piece is actually a meticulously cut paper design created by Buffalo-based artist Maude White.
The artist has a great respect for paper and believes that every sheet has the potential to tell its own story. With each careful, hand-cut slice, she draws upon the material's lasting strength to create delicate, nature-inspired images filled with amazing amounts of awe-inspiring detail. White depends on both positive and negative space to express the narrative within each elaborate illustration.
“By respecting and honoring paper for what it is, and not considering it a stepping-stone to something greater, I feel like I am communicating some of the pleasure it brings to me,” explains White. “I am not creating for Art's sake. I am creating for Paper's sake, to make visible the stories that every piece of paper attempts to communicate to us.”
