News Anchor Unknowingly Reports Her Own Proposal to Her Fellow TV Journalist Boyfriend Live on Camera

Some people find love in the most unexpected places. For a news anchor named Cornelia Nicholson, that meant finding her other half in a coworker, a reporter named Riley Nagel. And given that both of their careers are in broadcast television, Nagel had a unique opportunity to deliver an epic proposal that is melting hearts around the world.

In a now-viral video, Nicholson, who works for NBC affiliate WRCB-TV as a weekend news anchor, appears reading from the teleprompter. Suddenly, she reads a script that its oddly close to her own life, as it describes “two young journalists who just happened to find love in the same industry.” As she remains professional and keeps reading, she finds herself introducing Nagel to the studio for a “special report.”

Nagel then walks towards her with a bouquet in hand. He then explains how he was drawn to her since they met, and how it would only be fitting to ask him to marry her at a TV news studio, as that's what brought them together when they were introduced to each other years ago. Nicholson, taken aback and moved by the grand gesture, says yes as she cries tears of joy.

While now living in Tennessee, the pair began their story together in March 2020, while working at a news station in Montana. According to People, Nagel was a reporter hired a month earlier than Nicholson, who was hired as a weekend producer and weekday reporter. As such, Nicholson was assigned to shadow him. Shortly afterwards, they became a couple. A cross-country move later, Nicholson got her anchor gig and he got a reporting job at the same news station.

Planning his big proposal, Nagel went to the station management. “I was like, ‘Before you guys say no, hear me out—I think this could be pretty cool,’” Nagel says. “They’re like, ‘We’ve never had this happen before.' They came back, and they’re like, ‘Okay, we’re scared to do it live.'” To reach some middle ground, they offered him to film it after the broadcast and air it later. “I wasn’t concerned about her saying no,” he recalled.

Now, not only did they get a memory they'll cherish forever, but they also get to share it with the audience that inspired them to pursue their careers in the first place. “To see all the love from the community has been so nice because we both got into this job to be a voice for the community—to get to know our neighbors and share their stories with our audience,” Nicholson says. “It was nice to be able to share our story with them.”

This is Cornelia Nicholson, a news anchor for NBC affiliate WRCB-TV.

She and her boyfriend Riley Nagel met while working at a news station in Montana as a producer and reporter, respectively.

Their careers gave Nagel the unique opportunity to surprise Nicholson with a wedding proposal on live TV.

And best of all: she said yes! Congrats to the happy couple.
