Humorous Trading Cards of Middle-Aged Men Go Viral in Small Japanese Town

Yu-Gi-Oh. Pokémon. Magic: The Gathering. These are some of the world’s most popular trading card games (TCGs), and yet children in Kawara, a small town in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture, are opting for something a little more unique. Their homegrown TCG doesn’t feature fire-breathing dragons, gigantic orcs, or wand-wielding wizards—it features middle-aged and elderly men (ojisan).

Artist Creates Hyperrealistic Paintings Teeming With Microscopic Details [Interview]

When asked about his artistic influences, Marco Grassi often credits sfumato as one of them. The technique, which gradually blends colors, light, and shadow, emerged during the Renaissance, and lent itself to the hazy yet realistic canvases that characterize the era. Though compelled by it, Grassi also knew he wanted to push the style further, merging its core principles with that of contemporary art. And so Grassi’s own visual language emerged.

Watch How Zoo Elephants Protect Their Herd During a Recent Earthquake in Southern California

Earthquakes are frightening experiences for anyone, but for elephants, who “hear” with their feet, they can be particularly terrifying. A video from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido shows how their elephants came together when a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California on Monday, April 14. The video, published by the San Diego Wildlife Alliance, shows the elephants coming together in an “alert circle” as the camera shakes.

Artist Transforms Discarded Books Into Mini Mountainous Sculptures

Just as books hold knowledge, ancient mountains have their own stories to tell. For over two decades, interdisciplinary artist Guy Laramée has been exploring this concept with his ongoing Bookwork. He breathes new life into old, discarded volumes, transforming their pages into dreamlike, geological sculptures. Laramée currently works from his mountainside studio in Nova Friburgo, Brazil, where he’s inspired by the dramatic peaks of the nearby Pico da Caledônia.
