National Geographic Announces Its “Pictures of the Year”

Young penguins taking the plunge, a cicada invasion, and Morocco's annual rose harvest festival are just some of the subjects of National Geographic‘s “Pictures of the Year.” Celebrated in the December 2024 issue, the 20 extraordinary photographs were culled from more than 2.3 million images taken by National Geographic photographers. Continuing its tradition of exceptional visual storytelling, NatGeo's photographers move around the globe to seek out unique moments.

In Yukon, Canada’s westernmost territory, winters are long, cold, and dark. The subarctic climate lends itself to a fantastic assortment of winter sports and remarkable landscape, which features rugged mountains, scenic trails, and glacier-fed alpine lakes. It has also lent itself to an idiosyncratic annual event: the Hair Freezing Contest. Held each winter season at the Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs in Whitehorse, the Hair Freezing Contest began in 2011.

12,000-Year-Old Petroglyphs Found in India May Point To a Previously Unknown Civilization

In the state of Maharashtra, in western India, lies a unique window into the nation’s ancient past and rich cultural heritage. A series of rock carvings known as petroglyphs, estimated to be 12,000 years old, offer priceless insight into the history of the area. Sitting atop small hills in the Konkan region, they've become known as the Konkan petroglyphs.
