Heatherwick’s Debut Thai Design Is Inspired by the Country’s Traditional Lanterns

Renowned architecture studio Heatherwick is making its debut in Thailand with a new cluster of buildings inspired by Thai lanterns. Hatai is a public space and two hotels nestled in Bangkok's Silom neighborhood. Using stacked glowing forms that bring softness to the skyline, Heatherwick incorporates Thai tradition into the design. Located on the historic site of the Narai Hotel, Hatai will feature a revamp of the hotel, plus a new Six Senses property.

Short Doc Takes Us Inside a 1,300-Year-Old Hotel Run by Same Family for 46 Generations in Japan

Japan is a culturally rich nation filled with history that endures today. One prime example of this is Hōshi, a 1,300-year-old ryokan (a Japanese traditional inn) in the city of Komatsu. Founded in 717, it holds the record for the world’s oldest, continually run family business, as well as third oldest hotel in Japan. Since its opening, 46 generations of Hōshi family members have overseen the hotel operations.

Spectral Curtains of Light Created Through Long-Exposure Photos Float Across Stark Landscapes

It started with an accident—or, in this case, more of a pleasant surprise. Back in 2014, Reuben Wu was shooting in California’s Trona Pinnacles national park at night when he realized something unexpected had wormed its way into his photographs. A truck’s headlights had illuminated the surrounding landscape; but, rather than being discouraged by a possibly ruined image, Wu was struck by inspiration.
