U-2 Spy Plane Pilot Captures Stunning Up-Close Photos of Northern Lights

Many photographers are enchanted by the colorful glow of the Northern Lights, but no one has ever photographed them quite like Ross Franquemont. Based out of the Beale Air Force Base in California, Franquemont is a U-2 pilot and instructor with a passion for photography. On a recent overseas mission from the UK, a run through the Northern Lights at 70,000 feet provided him with an incredible setting for some one-of-a-kind photographs.

Special Effects Makeup Artist Subtly Transforms Her Face Into Striking Illusions

Special effects makeup artist Monika Falčik produces striking—yet subtle—looks that will make you do a double-take. A self-confessed “makeup junkie” from Lithuania, she uses the material to create illusions that her entire face has shifted or that her hand suddenly has a heart-shaped hole in it. Creatures are also popular subjects for Falčik, from beautiful butterflies to slippery reptiles to a ferocious big cat. What’s even more impressive is that Falčik is entirely self-taught.

Sonora-based artist Phil Vance creates incredible typography portraits rendered entirely in hand-written text. Drawn to pattern, texture, and color, the artist describes his process as “cross hatching but with words.” From Einstein to Mark Twain, each portrait from the In Their Own Words series pays tribute to Vance’s favorite historical and artistic figures.

Artist Paints Imaginary Ecosystems Bursting With Colorful Flora and Fauna

Portland-based artist Yellena James creates kaleidoscopic, biomorphic artworks that resemble colorful ecosystems, filled with imaginary flora and fauna. With an aim to illustrate places that are “hypnotically familiar and yet hauntingly exotic,” James’ most recent ethereal universes explore delicate organic forms and textural terrains. Rendered in her distinct, vibrant color palette on large canvases and round panels, James uses a combination of pens, inks, acrylic, and gouache paint.
