For the past several years, photographer Ricki Beason has been helping rescue dogs find homes while providing viewers with some eye candy that lasts throughout the year. Her annual calendar called Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs pairs hunky—shirtless—Texas-based firefighters, cops, and military veterans with shelter and rescue dogs available for adoption. In addition to these pups, the proceeds made from selling the calendar go to rescues across the state.
Beason started the calendar with a mission: to change the misconception that shelter dogs are “broken” or that something is “wrong” with them. “I decided to start a project that would benefit not only the rescues involved,” she writes, “but also raise awareness that rescue dogs are just as wonderful as designer dogs.” She adds, “These pups are worthy of being seen for their full potential and not to be overlooked because they didn’t come from a breeder or pet store.”
Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs also highlights servicemen who dedicate their lives to their country. “These brave men put their lives on the line everyday to keep us safe,” she explains. “These aren’t male models, these aren’t actors; these men are real life heroes.” All of the guys involved are also canine lovers, and some have rescue dogs of their own. Their enthusiasm for these pups shines month after month.
The 2017 version of Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs is now available through Beason’s website.
