Is it just us or do these trees look like something out of a sci-fi movie or, the very least, digital paintings? Sure, there's a bit of post processing done to these images but, for the most part, these are actual photos of Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. Back in 2009, we posted on Singapore's super-tall solar trees that function as towering vertical gardens. The 82 ft to 160 ft tree-like structures are part of a $1 billion cutting-edge horticultural project for the country.
As CNN reported on the supertrees, “It's pretty innovative stuff. The structures mimic the ecological functions of real trees through their environmentally sustainable features. Some have photovoltaic cells on their canopies to harvest solar energy to light up at night, others are integrated with cooled conservatories and serve as air exhaust receptacles.”
