On the popular interview show Hot Ones, host Sean Evans invites celebrity guests to eat chicken wings as he asks them questions. There’s something about an activity like that that feels more authentic, like an actual conversation rather than a perfunctory interview with a famous person. In that same vein, PBS Digital Studios is now premiering The Drawing Room with comedian and cartoonist Mo Welch. She captures that same feeling, but with an artsy twist. Whereas Hot Ones has wings and hot sauces, The Drawing Room has a set of easels.
In each episode, Welch interviews her guests as she draws them, and they sketch her. Both are set at their respective stations and can’t see what the other is doing. As they work, they talk, concentrating on their easels. It feels a bit like we’re watching a private chat.
The inaugural interview features Brett Goldstein, a comedian known for his stand-up, co-creating the Apple television show Shrinking, and his role in the soccer-themed comedy Ted Lasso. Over the course of the 10-minute conversation, we learn that Goldstein and Welch are friends; Welch actually appears in Shrinking. The conversation flows easily and is full of laughter. Welch asks Goldstein about a disastrous Mamma Mia! audition, after which she reveals something about her own life—a fact that Goldstein didn’t know, based on his astonished and amused reaction.
At the end of the episode, the two reveal their drawings to each other. Welch created a cartoon, while Goldstein imagined his friend as a “school marm,” ending the show with another laugh.
