Serbian artist Endre Penovác masterfully captures the charm of animals with expressive brush strokes and gestural marks. Perhaps best known for his fluffy black cats rendered in watercolor and ink, his latest work takes the form of another four-legged species. To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Dog (beginning February 16, 2018), the creative illustrator’s adorable series of fluffy dog drawings capture the various lovable characteristics of man’s best friend.

Created with a combination of acrylic paint, black ink, and pencil, Penovác’s illustrations feature black, shaggy pups that often have so much hair, the only other visible features are their glistening eyes and adorable wet noises. Rendered simply in shapes of smudged black ink, and overlaid with freely-drawn pencil marks to illustrate their wild fur, the artist expertly exhibits the art of gestural drawing. Other pieces are illustrated with wet-on-wet watercolor that has slowly bled onto the page, creating the effect of soft, fuzzy fur. From playful pups to bounding hounds, each doggy depiction expresses the lovable pet’s individual personality.
