As one of our favorite modern day artists, how could we not write about Audrey Kawasaki's brand new show that starts on September 8th? Midnight Reverie is the title of her second solo exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York, which runs until October 6. Audrey applies thin washes of oil paint onto wooden panels, painting her gorgeous female subjects that delicately straddle the line between innocence and eroticism.
What's different is that Audrey, for the very first time, is also using layers of solid black acrylic in her works, which adds a stark contrast to the delicate features of her signature female forms. She's also added more color, which seems to bring more depth and meaning to each piece.
As she says, “Some of the pieces have windows, like passage-ways into another world, yet it can also feel like limbo or static–wanting to walk through to the other side, but not being able to. Others are deep in the make believe, magical, mystical realm. In these, the black parts represent a void, emptiness or the unknown, yet they can also be something real and solid, like holes or shadows.”
