World’s Largest Sand Sculpture Festival in Belgium

Now that it's officially summer, it's prime time for people to hit the beach and soak in some sun, though some truly imaginative folks do more than simply lounge around. Sand sculptors take this opportunity to show what they do best. To share and celebrate the work of gifted sand artists, there is an annual festival, the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, and it has just recently kicked off in Blankenberge, Belgium with over 150 carefully crafted creations on display.

Festival goers are welcomed to explore the 4,000m2 resort filled with figurative and architectural constructs made entirely out of sand. With days leading up to the opening of the Sand Sculpture Festival, artists were hard at work assembling, carving, sculpting, and putting the finishing touches on their detailed pieces, which pay homage to anything from film to architecture. Some truly remarkable pieces include fictional characters like RoboCop as well as real-life monuments like the Lincoln Memorial.

The sand sculpture festival is currently open to the public and will feature the magnificent creations through September 15, 2013.
