Beautiful Geometric Shelter Inspired by a Flowering Cactus

Designed by Mexican architect Ivn Jurez of X-Studio, Cactaceae is an otherworldly construction that blends a human-made structure into nature. Jurez developed the piece as a tribute to the land and, located somewhere in the desert of Tropic of Cancer in Mexico, it was inspired by the surrounding, flowering cacti.

Through his continued exploration of the relationship between art and function, Jurez creates all kinds of work that fit perfectly within their surroundings. This site-specific installation is formed out of triangular shapes merged together into a geometric form. It provides an interior space for reflection and shelter from the sun, and light radiates into the peaceful interior through the stenciled flower patterns that cover the surface.

The silhouetted form of each resident as well as the color of the piece appear differently throughout the day. They change with the lights and shadows that are cast along the surface and that radiate out from the interior. Jurez says: “At dusk, the light dilutes its apparent solidity, becoming a piece that illuminates from within and that rubs off the landscape itself.”
