Luminous Abstract Paintings Filled with the Energy of NYC Nightlife

We were excited when New York-based artist Alexandra Pacula contacted us to share information about her first solo show, Luminous Heights, at Gallery Henoch. The collection features rare and stunning cityscape paintings of New York City, with a bit of a twist. The artist beautifully blurs city lights from buildings, street lamps, taxi cabs, and bridges to create an abstract portrayal of the urban environment from various perspectives.

In the large scale pieces, graphic squares, lines, and circles merge together in luminous, glowing colors to convey the energetic sensations of New York at night. “I recreate the feeling of dizziness and confusion by letting the paint blur and allowing shapes to dissolve. I suggest motion in order to slow down the scene and capture the fleeting moments, which tend to be forgotten,” explains Pacula. “I want the viewer's eye to travel within my composition and experience a familiar, exhilarating event of an actual nightly excursion.”

Pacula's solo show is currently on exhibit and will remain at Gallery Henoch through October 25, 2014.
