When we first wrote about Moscow-based artist Anastasia Ablogina back in 2018, we focused on her textured palette knife paintings that capture the majestic beauty of whales. The talented artist is still creating work inspired by the world’s ocean giants, but her portfolio has also expanded to feature an entire range of animals, from foxes and rabbits to owls and sea turtles.
Rendered in her distinct, textured style, Ablogina captures the vibrant energy of the natural world with thick brush strokes and sweeping blends of vibrant color. Although abstract, each painting captures the essence and movement of each animal. Whales feature marbled hues that mirror the fluid seawater and rippling sunlight, while land animals and birds are rendered in daubs of colorful paint that looks like fur or feathers.
Ablogina clearly lives and breathes her craft, as well as her love of nature—but her success was created through years of practice and exploration. She writes on Instagram (translated from Russian), “Walking creatively means constantly succumbing to self-criticism, self-expression and self-awareness, wandering about your memories, dreams, the world (whether it’s real or not), yielding to your imagination and being able to return from there with baggage of the unreal.”
