Moscow-based artist Anastasia Ablogina creates expressive palette knife paintings that capture the majestic beauty of the world’s largest mammal, the whale. Using thick daubs of acrylic paint, each textured whale painting is full of energy, illustrating their powerful movements as they glide through the sea and breach the ocean’s surface.
From humpbacks to blue whales, Ablogina paints each ocean giant with a myriad of pastel hues. Contrasting against deep blue backgrounds, the colors mix and marble, mirroring the fluid seawater, crashing waves, and ripples of sunlight that shimmer from above. Although Ablogina’s style is abstract, each whale features lifelike details such as their dorsal fins and ventral pleats that run vertically down the underside of a whale's jaw all the way to its stomach. In some pieces, the mammal’s eye can be seen, dwarfed by its colossal size, yet full of emotion.
You can see more of Ablogina’s incredible paintings on Instagram, where you’ll find portraits of other animals such as birds, lions, and horses. You can also buy original artworks via the artist's online store.
