Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes is a Staff Editor at My Modern Met and Manager of My Modern Met Store. She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned her BFA in Illustration and MFA in Illustration Practice. Sara is also an embroidery illustrator and writer living in Seattle, Washington. She runs Bear&Bean, a studio where she stitches pet portraits and other beloved creatures. She chronicles the creativity of others through her website Brown Paper Bag and newsletter, Orts. Her latest book is Threads of Treasure: How to Make, Mend, and Find Meaning Through Thread, published in 2014. Sara’s work has been recognized in Be Creative With Workbox, Embroidery Magazine, American Illustration, on Iron and Wine’s album Beast Epic, among others. When she’s not stitching or writing, Sara enjoys planning things that bring together the craft community. She is the co-founder of Camp Craftaway, a day camp for crafty adults with hands-on workshops in the Seattle area.

Watch 1,000 Musicians Perform Foo Fighters’ Song ‘My Hero’ in Honor of Taylor Hawkins

Famed Foo Fighters drummer and singer Taylor Hawkins died suddenly on March 25, 2022, at 50 years old. (The exact cause of death is unknown at this time.) Known for his “athletic” performances on stage, the sudden loss has hit hard for his bandmates and fans. Rockin’1000, a massive 1,000-person ensemble from Italy, is paying tribute to Hawkins and his talents.

Man Plays Song by The Lumineers on a Public Piano, Then a Band Member Joined Him

Sam Spencer wasn’t expecting much when he sat down at a sidewalk piano in Boston and began playing the song “Ophelia” by The Lumineers. But as he was tapping away at the keys, two people stopped to listen. One of them even began recording his performance. It didn’t end there. The other guy then stood next to Spencer at the bench and started playing along.

Artist Creates Custom Caskets for the 19 Child Victims of the Uvalde Mass Shooting

A custom casket maker is helping the victims of the Uvalde mass shooting be peacefully laid to rest. Trey Ganem is the owner of SoulShine Industries, a company specializing in caskets that are painted to reflect the deceased individual's interests and personality. Ganem used his creative skills and caring heart to work with family members in Uvalde to memorialize their slain loved ones.

Florida High Schooler Couldn’t Talk About Being Gay in Graduation Speech, So He Talked About His “Curly Hair”

Senior class president Zander Moricz was given explicit instructions as he planned his graduation address to the student body. If he was going to criticize Florida’s new “Don’t Say Gay” law, the school administration would cut his mic mid-speech. Moricz, an openly gay student, had been involved in LGBTQ+ activism prior to the ceremony.
