Long-Lost Renaissance Masterpiece by Famous Artist Andrea Mantegna Has Resurfaced in Pompeii

A long-lost painting from the mid-16th century that has been attributed to famed Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna is now temporarily on view at the Vatican Museums. After three months, the freshly restored painting will go back to the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompeii, where it was originally discovered and has hung for centuries. The scene, titled Deposition of Christ, depicts Jesus’ descent from the cross after his crucifixion.

Thousands of People Join ‘Stand Up for Science’ Events Across the U.S. and Worldwide

Last week, thousands of federal workers, researchers, and allies participated in the Stand Up for Science event in Washington, D.C., in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The Friday, March 7 date was a studied choice, with organizers hoping to make an impression on the U.S. Senate which was in session a few blocks away. The goal? To protest the large-scale layoffs and budget cuts suffered by science-led agencies due to decisions by the Trump administration.

Trendy, Pointy Shoes From the Middle Ages Confirm the Old Adage That Beauty—or at Least Fashion—Is Pain

In a world driven by efficiency and optimization, how often do we hear “fashion over function” nowadays, instead of the other way around? Such was the case in the Middle Ages, where trends dominated, especially amongst the nobility and the upper crust. An extremely long and pointy–not to mention uncomfortable–shoe called the poulaine falls into this category, showing us that the trend cycle is nothing new, if not less uncomfortable today.
