Earlier this week, film critics were treated to a private, five-minute clip screening from the Spencer film, starring Kristen Stewart, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. And on August 26, the official first trailer was released to the public. The much-anticipated film—directed by Pablo Larraín— tells the story of the events leading up to Princess Diana’s decision to end her marriage with Prince Charles. Their marriage and the life of “Princess Di” is a heartbreaking one that’s captured the hearts of many around the world. Not many people could pull off portraying the beloved British royal; however, if the trailer and the critics’ first impressions are anything to go by, Stewart seems to have pulled it off perfectly.

Although the five-minute scene has not yet been released publicly, it portrays an emotional face-off between Diana (played by Stewart) and Charles (played by Jack Farthing) at the Sandringham estate. Critics were so impressed with Stewart's performance, that many are convinced she’ll win an Oscar. Jason Guerrasio tweeted, “Kristen Stewart is going all out for that Oscar glory. And her Princess Di accent is spot on!” Lauren Huff wrote, “The actress uncannily channels Princess Di, nailing her whispery tone and accent.”

In the trailer, glimpses of Stewart as Diana reveal her uncanny resemblance to the princess. She’s captured looking miserable and troubled, while she spins and runs through her stately, marital home. Even in the film posters, Stewart, with a blonde bob and somber gaze, looks eerily like a living Diana.

Spencer will premiere next month at the Venice Film Festival and will open in cinemas in November 2021.
