Beauty pageants may reward poise and looks; but, if the Miss Grand Thailand contest is any indication, the way to truly leave your mark is to be yourself. We first saw contestant Kamolwan Chanago gracefully recover from her veneers mishap onstage. Now, another participant named Darathorn Yoothong has made waves around the world for her unabashed, high-energy dancing.
During the swimsuit segment of the competition, the pageant production cut to commercials with the song “Nobody” by the K-pop group Wonder Girls. As the camera panned to show the participants casually swaying to the music, the camera caught Yoothong dancing her heart out with some fast-paced, hip-hop-inspired moves. Her now-viral dance has become known on social media as the “Kalasin Strut,” after her home province, which she was representing.
A trained dancer, Yoothong regularly documents her choreography on social media, showing this wasn’t a one-off thing. She even prepared a dance routine for the pageant, allowing her to showcase her talents at this competition. Her electric personality was even noticeable during the introductions, when she cheekily saluted the camera. Reveling in her newfound fame, Yoothong has been reposting parodies of her dance on social media.
Though Yoothong only made it to the top 20 of the pageant, she’s shown joy for simply having the chance to be a part of it all. “I just truly be myself but this is honestly unbelievable than I ever imagined,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you so much for the love from everyone all around the world. I promise I’ll be back stronger and even more fun.”
