After Two Decades, the Grand Egyptian Museum Has Finally Opened in Giza

Since 2012, planned openings for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza have come and gone, mostly thanks to funding issues, logistical hurdles, the pandemic, nearby wars, and multiple revolutions. Just this past summer, GEM pushed its July 2 opening due to conflicts between Iran and Israel in the surrounding region. But now, after more than 20 years of construction and delays, the sprawling, 120-acre museum has finally opened in its entirety.

The Netherlands Will Return Stolen 3,500-Year-Old Sculpture to Egypt

On November 2, Prime Minister Dick Schoof of the Netherlands announced that his country would return a 3,500-year-old sculpture to Egypt by the end of this year. A recent investigation concluded that the Egyptian artifact had been stolen and illegally exported to the Netherlands, most likely amid the unrest of the Arab Spring either in 2011 or 2012.

Artist Carves Monumental Celebration of Love Into Pristine Archipelago Sand

After completing a monumental earth mural in Iceland, David Popa was traveling around Nordskot in northern Norway when he stumbled upon a small archipelago. Along the island’s rocky shore was a pristine sandbank, which quickly caught the artist’s attention. Could this be the site of a new project?
