In the right hands, anything can be an tool for art. For Sam Ward, that tool is a power washer. Not your typical art supply, it can usually be found in home improvement stores, and yet, Ward’s results belong in a museum. The Texas-based man uses his power washer to create images on concrete driveways, relying on different nozzles and levels of pressure to get the details and shading in each picture just right.

For the 11th year, the California Academy of Sciences has announced the winners of its renowned BigPicture Photography Competition. Chaired by acclaimed wildlife photographer Suzi Eszterhas, the photo contest highlights our planet's biodiversity, while at the same time speaking to the struggles that it faces. National Geographic contributing photographer Jaime Rojo won the Grand Prize for a striking photo taken in Mexico's Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

During World War II, Parachuting Pigeons Carried Messages to French Resistance

World War II saw technological and scientific advancements, like penicillin or the radar, that we still use today. But the war also saw the troops turn to more unorthodox methods for coordination. Among these was the use of pigeons to deliver messages. Many of them were strapped to tiny parachutes and placed in crates that were later dropped behind enemy lines in occupied France.
