The traditional paisley pattern is of Persian and Indian origin, but you’ve probably seen versions of the ornate teardrop-shaped motifs on western textiles such as men’s ties and pocket squares. The paisley pattern has traveled the silk routes from East to West, adorned the clothing of people all over the world, and even became an emblem of the hippy era after it was popularized by the Beatles. Inspired by the timeless motif, Indian artist Parth Kothekar creates incredibly intricate paper cut-outs.
Each artwork is meticulously cut out with a craft knife and can take up to a week to complete, but it is the process that inspires Kothekar to create his work. “If it is challenging, it motivates me,” he reveals. “This time, I wished to go intricate like never before which motivated me to work with paisley designs.” Each delicate work features hundreds—if not thousands—of tiny sections cut out of white paper, resulting in stunning designs that look like ornate pieces of lace.
Kothekar’s paper paisley designs are impressive in their own right, but the artist also has an entire portfolio of other paper-cut subjects. From ornate architectural features to human portraits, each piece showcases his tremendous talent and skill. “The thing with paper cutouts is that one doesn’t know the final output until the end,” says Kothekar. “I have an assumption of what it might look and that is what I work with. It is the curiosity of finding out if I have got it that keeps me going.”
