Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but this heart-warming maternity photoshoot by Enchanted Hills Photography reveals just how sweet and gentle the breed really is. The series features Mama Pickles, a rescue pit bull who recently gave birth to eight adorable puppies. The stunning images show the mom-to-be just days before she gave birth, as well as post-labor shots that capture her posing proudly next to her snoozing litter of newborn pups.
Two-year-old Mama Pickles was found wandering the streets while she was heavily pregnant. Animal control found her and brought her to a local shelter, but unfortunately they didn’t have the resources to help her deliver her litter. Luckily, she was found by Pits and Giggles Rescue in Fort Mill, South Carolina—a non-profit organization that specializes in caring for pregnant dogs and their puppies.
“When the opportunity came to save her, we were thrilled,” says Amanda Forsythe, the founder and CEO of Pits and Giggles. “We love each of our mamas and Pickles is no exception.” The team decided to organize a maternity photoshoot for Pickles, but just a few days after the initial shoot, she went into labor. “When this happens, most of our mama dogs want space and privacy, not so with Pickles,” reveals Forsythe. “This mama needed people with her before she was comfortable bringing her babies into the world.”
Mama Pickles certainly knows how to strike a pose, and it’s clear just how excited she is to be a new mom. However, it’s important to remember the importance of responsible spay-neuter practices. “She doesn't know it yet, but this litter will be her very last,” says Forsythe. “Mama Pickles, like all our moms, will need special care postpartum.” Dogs just like Mama are often bred repeatedly, which takes a toll on their bodies. “They're often heartworm positive and carrying a luggage rack of other medical issues,” explains Forsythe. Mama Pickles and her 8 babies will be spayed or neutered in preparation for adoption. Nearly 10 percent of the organization’s annual proceeds go toward spay/neuter services for dogs in their community, giving more dogs the chance to find loving forever homes.
