If you swear by weighted blankets for soothing anxiety, you’ll probably relate to Polly, a goat rescued by Goats of Anarchy sanctuary in New Jersey. Polly faces a range of challenges, including anxiety, blindness, and neurological issues. However, her rescuer, Leanne Lauricella, discovered an unexpected remedy—dressing Polly in a yellow duck costume. When she wears her adorable outfit, she suddenly feels safe, becomes calm, and even drifts off to sleep.
Polly was rescued back in 2016, when the dedicated team at Goats of Anarchy noticed that the blind goat only felt safe when she was nestled deep in hay. When she was adopted, Polly’s new owner wrapped her snuggly in a blanket—just like swaddling a baby—to give her that same sense of comfort and security. She always felt most at ease when wrapped up, but as soon as she moved or stood, the blanket would fall away, and her anxiety would return. To keep that comforting feeling with her, Polly’s owner came up with a solution—a cozy duck costume that stayed on and helped her feel safe and calm.
Polly began wearing her duck costume everywhere, and now, she has an equally cute pink pig costume, too. The sweet goat’s adorable quirk is a reminder that animals need comfort just like people do, and her heartwarming story even inspired a children’s book, called Polly and Her Duck Costume: the True Story of a Little Blind Rescue Goat.
Check out some adorable photos of Polly, happily dressed in her cozy costumes below. And if you want to discover more of what Goats of Anarchy do to help goats, follow their popular Instagram account.
