Fun-Loving Photographer Takes Tiny Figurines On Big Adventures

Brazilian photographer Renan Viana proves that even small outings can turn into big adventures. With nothing more than his camera, a handful of tiny toy figurines, and a wild imagination, Viana magically transforms his local surroundings into larger-than-life scenery.

As part his ongoing project titled I Shrunk the People, Viana places little plastic characters in locations that range from sunny paths and sandy beaches to sidewalk puddles and subway stations. He then documents their adventures and activities in order to playfully personify them and explore “what it would be like to be so small in that situation.”

Viana was inspired to pursue miniature photography in 2014, when he purchased a pack of fun-sized figures from an antique shop. After a fresh coat of paint and some small repairs, the antique figures were as good as new, leaving Viana with the tiny travel buddies he has come to know and love. “The miniature figures are my companions to discover new places,” he tells Instagram Blog. “I carry a few around in a little box, and whenever I go out, I set up scenes on my walks.”

Today, he continues this quirky project, shooting his subjects in sites all over São Paulo. In addition to outdoor locations, Viana also employs food, flowers, and other everyday objects as his whimsical settings.

With adventurous antique figurines as his subjects, photographer Renan Viana specializes in miniature photography with a travel-inspired twist.
