Plastic is a major culprit in today's pollution problem. Though this material can take centuries to decompose, people all over the world continue to use it to package products and store food. In order to put an end to this trend, eco-experts are teaming up to come up with compostable alternatives, like SCOBY, a wrapper made from waste.
Developed by MakeGrowLab, a studio that “blends science, design, and entrepreneurship to bring Biofabrication to everyday life,” SCOBY offers a sustainable solution to the single-use plastic problem. Each wrapper is crafted entirely out of local agricultural leftovers, which means that it's 100% compostable.
This ability to “turn bio-waste into bio-material” is the only thing that sets SCOBY apart from traditional plastic wrap. Like the latter, the former is flexible, durable, and water-resistant. It also generates an oxygen barrier, which keeps foods fresh, and has an impressive two-year shelf life.
What makes the SCOBY particularly revolutionary, however, is the ways in which it can be disposed. Once you're finished with a wrapper, you can either compost it at home or eat it. That's right—as it's made entirely from vegetables, each sheet of SCOBY is edible. Whether you opt to regenerate soil or have a sustainable snack, you can be sure that your use of SCOBY is bringing us one step closer to the “biorevolution.”
MakeGrowLab, an eco-friendly team of designers and scientists, has created SCOBY, a new type of sustainable packaging material.
