When we last checked in with artist Aja Trier, she was crafting clever paintings that placed popular icons inside of Van Gogh‘s swirling Starry Night. While Trier still looks to this world-famous work of art for inspiration, she has since switched subjects, turning her attention from pop culture to pups.
In her Starry Night Dogs series, Trier imagines a world in which our four-legged friends sat for Van Gogh. Much like her previous paintings, each portrait features the familiar Starry Night sky rendered in the thick brushstrokes characteristic of Post-Impressionism. While each reinterpretation retains the spiraling clouds and sparkling stars found in the original painting, Trier often experiments with color, making each piece her own.
In addition to general studies of standard dog breeds like Corgis, Chihuahuas, and Shiba Inus, Trier also creates custom pet portraits. To craft each personalized work of art, Trier works from a photograph. This ensures that each painting captures the likeness of your beloved dog (or cat)—but in a luminous new light.
Trier also sells prints of her popular Starry Night Dogs series. You browse through her current collection on Etsy.

To make each portrait as unique as possible, she often slightly alters the swirling sky.
However, her use of thick brushstrokes ensures each painting has the look and feel of a Van Gogh masterpiece.
