Dutch artist Suzan Drummen is known for her dazzling and colorful designs that spread across the floor in stunning geometric displays. Drummen, who we previously posted about here, has unveiled two new installations this year–one at the Hague's Gallery Maurits van de Laar, and one at a Hong Kong shopping mall. In both works, we see the customary intricacy and bold hues that epitomize the artist's designs.
Drummen's installations are made from crystal, chrome-plated metal, precious stones, mirrors, and optical glass. While they appear clean and orderly from afar, the many small elements that make up each piece become disorienting when viewed up close. Symmetrical circles and psychedelic patterns still serve as the basis of the glittering floor designs, but Drummen's recent works display a striking new density, with each design packed with more colorful details than ever before.
“I hope that my work offers more than the visually perceptible, but that is the starting point,” says the artist. “Looking at art is a complex process. The first uninhibited look is quickly replaced by a search for meaning. We try to understand and give meaning to what we see. In our daily perception memory plays a major role: without memory we wouldn't recognize anything.” According to her, it is the sense of open-mindedness and not knowing that is so significant. She continues, “I do not understand the world, am amazed, again and again beguiled and enthralled. I find our existence terrific, which I want to celebrate, condense and accentuate.”
