While many artists use extensive color palettes in their work, others explore the intricacies of one shade to create poignant pieces. An artist known as RAH Azul does this beautifully, painting mesmerizing blue portraits of Mexican icons and pop culture legends. By using different shades of cerulean, sapphire, and turquoise, he builds a unique composition that highlights the features that make each of these figures so recognizable.

RAH Azul has painted the likenesses of artists such as Frida Kahlo, Selena Quintanilla, Tupac Shakur, and Kurt Cobain. The painter is a first generation American, born in East Los Angeles to Mexican parents from the small town of Zapotlanejo. Inspired by his roots, he also pays tribute to his heritage by painting regional legends such as actress María Félix, late boxer Salvador Sánchez, and singer Vicente Fernández.

To truly capture what made these celebrities great, RAH Azul relies on swirls and lines of several shades in both the portrait and the background. The latter usually features motifs that give a nod to the respective icon's career, like musical notes on Selena and Cobain's portraits. The vibrant backgrounds enhance an already unorthodox depiction, as the patches of color populate these creators’ faces. The result is an oneiric painting that evokes Van Gogh's Starry Night—as if stating that each person contains a universe of creative potential.

RAH Azul's blue portraits remind us that, ultimately, achieving a breathtaking portait is not necesarily a photorealistic one, but one that truly captures the spirit of the person being depicted.
