Director Satoshi Itasaka of Japanese studio h220430 is the mastermind behind this playful chair that seems to be suspended in mid-air. The Balloon Chair concept features what appear to be ten helium balloons attached by strings to a floating seat.
In reality, each balloon is constructed out of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and a cord that are connected to the ceiling by hidden anchors, giving the chair the illusion of weightlessness. The chair itself is composed of FRP, leather, steel, and urethane and looks like a fun place to rest.
The piece was “inspired by feelings of floating that the main character felt in the French movie, Le Ballon Rouge (1956),” explains the Japanese designer. “If you sit on this chair, you'll be able to think positive thoughts even if you are feeling down.”
Balloon Chair is currently on display at the Salone del Mobile at the Ventura Hive group exhibition. The event will be taking place in Milan now through through April 13, 2014.
