Bees are fascinating creatures, buzzing busily around to produce honey and beeswax in an extremely systematic fashion. However, as they quickly fly past, it's difficult to appreciate their beautiful, physical details, particularly when there is a fear of being stung! This extensive collection of macro photography, maintained by the USGS Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Program, provides viewers with an opportunity to appreciate and investigate the stunning natural colors, luminescent wings, and interesting shapes that form each unique creature.
For years, the program has developed ways to understand and identify wild bees, and this comprehensive image set provides a helpful system for recognizing the variety of flying insects. Alongside each image, organizer Sam Droege provides facts including notes about physical appearance, job functions, and general location for where the particular species can be found. Unlike many other amazingly detailed macro images, the photographs are set against a solid black background, serving mainly as a catalogue to help document the wide range of bees found all over the world.
