The Kansas City Chiefs claimed their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years when they beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. While the players and the fans are celebrating this monumental moment, there’s a reason for our four-legged friends to rejoice, too. Thanks to the Chiefs defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, 109 pups from a local animal shelter will soon have new homes. After the team's 31-20 victory, he pledged to pay the adoption fees for the dogs that were in the Kansas City Pet Project as of February 2—no matter how long it takes for them to find their forever homes. (The fees for rescuing a dog from the Kansas City Pet Project range from $75 to $300.)

The response to Nnadi's promise has been almost immediate. The KC Pet Project said that on Monday alone, 38 dogs left the shelter with new families and up to 30 more dogs going home the following day. “We want to thank all of the families who came out today and patiently waited to adopt a pet,” they shared on Facebook, “and we are beyond grateful to Derrick Nnadi for this incredibly kind gesture helping our city's pets.”

This isn’t the first time Nnadi has partnered with the local no-kill shelter. He connected with the KC Pet Project during his second year in the NFL and was inspired to do so because of his experience with adopting his first dog, Rocky. “When I first got him, he was very timid,” Nnadi said. “It made me think of how other animals, whether they're owned or in a shelter, are feeling scared and alone.”

During the season, Nnadi paid the adoption fee for a one-hard-to-adopt pup each time after the Chiefs won. Between the regular season and postseason, the team won 15 games, and all of the dogs Nnadi sponsored found homes.
