Why send flowers when you can give a bouquet that is hand-pressed into delicious shortbread cookies? Montecito-based baker Loria Stern creates pretty treats adorned with handpicked edible flowers and herbs that she selects from her own organic garden or finds in local farmers markets.
Stern came up with the idea of incorporating botanicals into her baked goods when she was asked to make desserts for a friend’s party. The soiree had the theme of “Flower Power” in the style of artist Georgia O'Keeffe. “The idea to press edible flowers into cookies hatched from that party,” reveals Stern. “Since then, I planted an organic garden in my backyard and now use flowers in all kinds of dishes.”
In addition to her signature flower pressed vanilla shortbread cookies, Stern also makes gluten-free versions that are each naturally colored according to their flavor. Green matcha cookies, raspberry rose geranium shortbread, and bright yellow lemon and turmeric biscuits are a few more of her tasty offerings. But Stern doesn’t stop there; she also makes cakes, pies, and even focaccia. Each delectable delight is beautifully decorated with the artistic baker’s pressed flowers that not only look pretty but add even more flavor.
