Like most public-facing places, the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka had to temporarily close due to COVID-19. However, anime fans can still have a preview of what’s in store for them once it’s open again. The museum recently released several videos on YouTube, giving you a virtual tour of some of the rooms there. The Ghibli Museum has a no-photography policy, making these rare video sneak peeks all the more special.
One video takes viewers through the main entrance of the museum building to the Space of Wonder room. Here, the sun shines through colorful stained glass windows featuring designs based on Hayao Miyazaki’s classic films. As the camera pans up, the spectacular ceiling fresco is revealed. Among hand-painted branches, flowers, and fruit, you’ll spot some of the studio’s biggest stars, including My Neighbor Totoro sisters, Mei and Satsuki, and Kiki, the flying delivery witch.
A second video takes us through the museum’s permanent exhibit, Where a Film is Born. Featuring a jumble of whimsical knickknacks, books, and art, the museum describes the theme of this room: “The room belongs to a boy who wishes to develop an idea of his own film. The room provides lots of inspiration for what will go on to the blank piece of paper on the desk to become the origin of an actual film.”
The Ghibli Museum staff also guides us through the museum at night, revealing more of the beautiful stained glass features that are lit with light. And in another video, we’re treated to a tour of the Straw Hat Café, home to Ghibli-themed tableware and tasty treats.
