On May 17, 2019, it was announced to the world that the Internet’s most beloved cat had sadly passed away at just 7 years old. Grumpy Cat—whose real name was actually Tardar Sauce—unfortunately encountered difficulties from a urinary tract infection that was too severe for her to overcome. She died peacefully on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2019 in the arms of her mom, Tabatha Bundesen.

From a litter of four kittens, Grumpy Cat was born on April 4, 2012 with a form of feline dwarfism that meant her face looked permanently grumpy, even if she didn't feel it. Amused by her adorably grouchy appearance, Tabatha’s brother posted a photo of Grumpy Cat on Reddit, sparking a viral reaction and the beginning of her career as an Internet sensation.

Despite her sad expression, Grumpy Cat brought happiness and laughter to millions and quickly became an icon. She appeared all over the web in various memes, she was invited on TV shows such as ABC News and Good Morning America, and became the face of Friskies (a cat food brand) and General Mills’ Honey Nut Cheerios. She even made her Broadway debut in a musical revival of Cats and starred in her own film, Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever (check out her impressive IMDb page).

Since the news of her passing, fans around the world have responded with touching tributes, and some have even created art in her honor. “Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile around the world—even when times were tough,” Grumpy Cat’s family says. “Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”
