Jellyfish are undeniably fascinating, but it’s pretty much impossible to see them up close without being stung. To celebrate the creature’s mysterious beauty, Japanese retailer You+MORE! teamed up with Kamo Aquarium to create umbrella designs based on real jellyfish species: the moon jelly, the northern sea nettle, and the spotted jelly.
Kamo Aquarium is known worldwide for its prolific research and breeding of jellyfish, and it even holds the current Guinness World Record for most number of jelly species on display. You+MORE! approached the aquarium’s Jellyfish Dome Team to come up with the designs for the umbrellas—each of which features specific details according to the species it's based on.
The moon jelly umbrella features blue gradient, petal-shaped markings, and is designed with a wider dome shape, mimicking the shape of its real-life counterpart. The umbrella based off the northern sea nettle features 16 orange stripes, referencing the jellyfish’s distinctive pattern, while the spotted jelly umbrella features wide scalloped edges and cute polka dots. Experts at Kamo Aquarium made sure that each design was visually accurate, and each umbrella even comes with a limited edition charm of a baby jellyfish.
You can buy your own jellyfish umbrella from the You+MORE! online store for 1,600 yen ($15) each.
