Dame Julie Andrews is best known for her work on the big screen, from her iconic film roles, including Mary Poppins (1964), The Sound of Music (1965), and The Princess Diaries series in the early aughts. The actress, now 89, has continued to work—and earn accolades—since then. Andrews just won the award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance as Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton at the 2025 Creative Emmys.

Andrews had previously been nominated for her performance in the Bridgerton role three times in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Joining her in the 2025 star-studded category were Hank Azaria (The Simpsons), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Jeffrey Wright (What If…?), and Steven Yeun (Invincible).

Particularly, Andrews won for her performance in the third season finale titled Into the Light. In this episode, Penelope Featherington, played by Nicola Coughlan, must choose between sharing her deepest secret with her family and acquaintances: the true identity of Lady Whistledown, the author of a gossip column that often gets the town talking and only appears as a voice-over played by Andrews.

While playing a key role, Andrews has yet to meet any of her castmates. “Of course, I see them on the show sometimes.” Andrews told Today. “But I do all my recording far, far away from them.” When asked about her thoughts on the show, she added, “I think it's gorgeous looking, and they're all wonderful in it, and they're lovely people to work with. Shonda Rhimes and the whole gang, they're terrific. And I'm thrilled that they asked me.”

The British actress shared that she gets into the role by using one memorable line. “I don’t record everything at one time, so to get back into character again, my first warmup is ‘My name is Lady Whistledown,’” she said. “That'll get me back into character.” Andrews describes her character as someone who gets very caustic from time to time. “She puts people down,” she said. “She’s more a teaser than anything else. ‘When will we discover such and such, and such and such,’” Andrews told Al Roker.

Since her voice has become such an integral part of the show, fans have longed for Andrews to make a cameo appearance. When asked by ET if she’d ever appear on camera, she replied. “No, no, no,” she said. “You know who Lady Whistledown really is, so I’m afraid it stays with me in the background. But I’m very happy to do that.”

The award marks Andrews’ third-ever Emmy win. The first was in 1973, when she took home the prize for Outstanding Variety Musical Series for The Julie Andrews Hour. In 2005, she received the Outstanding Musical Series for Broadway: The American Musical.
