Have you ever seen a pink cricket? There’s only a 1 in 500 chance of finding one, but bug enthusiast Deri Saputa was recently lucky enough to spot one in the wild. This incredibly rare fuchsia-colored katydid is the result of a condition called erythrism—a genetic mutation that allows for abnormal amounts of red pigment in the absence of “normal” green pigment.
Katydids are large, leaf-shaped, and usually green, allowing them to camouflage into the surrounding environment and hide from insect-chowing predators. However, pink katydids stand out brightly from green foliage, making their survival much more challenging. Perhaps this is the reason behind their rarity, which is why spotting one in the wild is so special. Saputa’s video shows the beautiful pink insect sitting calmly on his fingers as he films it with his camera.
