Photographer and conservationist Robert Irwin grew up in front of the camera and surrounded by wildlife. The spotlight became a platform for inspiring others to care about the natural world. From a young age, Irwin learned how to step out of the limelight and instead step behind the camera himself. Through his lens, he has been able to further his family’s mission of wildlife conservation. His artistic affinity has made him a published and award-winning wildlife photographer, whose upbringing allowed him to capture many species around the world. Now, as he continues the fight for conservation, particularly through photography, Irwin has taken note of the rise of AI and has choice words about the technology.
In a recent interview with Parade, Irwin shared his feelings about the role that AI plays in environmental conservation: “As with any advancement in technology, I think we sometimes forget about the environmental destruction that it can cause.”
As a photographer, Irwin shares his other concerns with AI, particularly the negative impact of machine-generated images: “I can definitely speak through, pun intended, the lens of photography. With AI, I think not only does it take away from the artistry of photography, but it also dilutes what is impressive. Because we’ve seen so many incredible things, we don’t realize that what is real and that’s more amazing because it’s real, you know?
“I’m looking for storytelling that shows nature as it’s intended. You’re not meddling with anything. You’re letting nature take its course, and you’re photographing it in its true and raw state. I don’t care how many AI photos you see. When you see a real, true representation of nature, there is a visceral feeling that hits you in the heart; you just can’t deny it.”
Irwin is currently serving as a primary judge for the annual Australia Zoo Crikey! Magazine Photography Competition. He is enforcing these sentiments in the magazine’s photography competition, passionately taking action for what he believes in, in true Irwin fashion. “In our competition at least, there is no room for AI, that’s for sure. It ain’t happening.”

He warns that AI may “dilute what is impressive” because people won’t be able to tell what is real and what is fake.
